"Writing this message for the Yearbook of KP government and looking back on our struggle over the past 12 months, reminds me repeatedly of the 2000 movie 'The Gladiator'. In one of the scenes they tell Maximus that, "You have a great name. He must kill your name before he kills you". But then, Maximus says, "Nothing happens to anyone that he is not fitted by nature to bear."
When PTI’s 3rd consecutive government took office in KP in February 2024, the province and its government lay in ruins because of a combination of two actors: Terrorism and PDM. While the story of terrorism is well known over the past two decades, it was the PDM that did more damage to KP and its people in less than 2 years than terrorism in 2 decades. The illegal and unconstitutional misrule of PDM left a trail of indescribable destruction in its wake. The government’s treasury was left with less than a month’s salary. Our new government had to pass two interim budgets to restore KP government to a legal order and financial discipline.
In addition to the scourge of PDM, our government had to deal with challenges that our peers hadn’t had to face at all. Our peaceful protests against the ‘theft of mandate’ were brutally treated. Our elected government was denied its legitimate right to put together its own team of administration. Because of these extraordinary circumstances, our government was unable to work on its own agenda well after the passage of budget and ADP in July 2024.
However, despite all these disadvantages, I can say this with confidence, and humility, that contrary to the deliberate misperception spread about our government, the best kept secret has been our progress in governance over the last 12 months. My confidence is not rooted in any opinions or wishful thinking, but in hard data, facts, and figures that this yearbook strives to present.
The people of Pakistan, especially, those of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, unflinchingly believe in the words of their leader Imran Khan and they have absolutely no doubt in their mind, just like we don’t have, that the tall lofty goals would be achieved – In Shaa Allah!
At a time when a team whose skipper has been wrongfully incarcerated and we have been forced to play against an opposing team in whose favour the playing field has been severely skewed. But we continue to play on the odds, and play with the belief to win, just like our ‘Skipper’ in 1992!
The 2024 yearbook will showcase the key achievements of KP’s 25 sectors, as in effort to remind everyone to believe in the words of our ‘Skipper’ and the progress accumulated on ground over the past 12 months. We will, through this yearbook, tell a real, 3-dimensional, quantifiable and verifiable – unlike some deliberately designed blue TikToks!
Despite the abovementioned challenges, I place our record of governance and progress accumulated over the past 12 months as the highest bar, and challenge all other governments to put theirs in competition against us, in a like-like competition.
The recent successful holding of KP PSL is a vivid demonstration that in its 2nd year with a permanent PTI government, the people of KP say that it is my unflinching belief that politicians and people are determined to take the destiny in their hands and bookwrite KP’s true present.
To my comrades of PTI, I end again from ‘The Gladiator’ that, "Whatever comes out of these gates, we’ve got a better chance if we work together."
And, to our detractors, I don’t have much to say except 4 words:
We will surprise you!
