KP CHILD PROTECTION AND WELFARE COMMISSION

The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa enacted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection & Welfare Act, 2010 for the care, protection, maintenance, welfare, training, education, rehabilitation and reintegration of children at risk in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

FUNCTIONS

  • To act as a focal point for effective supervision and coordination of child rights matters at provincial and local levels
  • To review laws, rules, and regulations and proposed new Laws for children
  • To coordinate with National Commission on the Rights of Children (NCRC);
  • To implement policies for the prevention, protection, rehabilitation, and reintegration of children at risk;
  • To establish, manage, supervise and control Child Protection Units at the district level
  • To develop and coordinate activities, programs, and plans for the development, protection, survival, participation, and rehabilitation of children at risk.

 

ACTIVITIES

Child Protection Units have been established in twelve (12) districts namely Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda, Kohat, Bannu, Buner, Lower Dir, Swat, Chitral, Abbottabad, Battagram. UNICEF is providing financial & technical support for eleven (11) CPUs while one unit at Peshawar was running under Grant-in-Aid. Functions of CPUs included:

  1. Identification, assessment, and registration of children at risk
  2. Provision of counseling/psychosocial support
  3. Provision of Social Support through Welfare Fund
  4. Raising awareness on child protection issues
  5. Formation of Child protection committees
  6. Establishing referral mechanism/Networking
